Room Ownership and Observer Mode

A shared session can be extremely powerful in instructor/student scenarios. To enable this functionality, we've introduced the concept of room ownership and observer mode.

A user can take ownership of a room by clicking on the Take Ownership button in the Shared Session Page. When a user takes ownership of the room, the room owner will be the only user that can make changes to the state of the room (e.g. enabling/disabling systems, the current region or structure, etc). Every other user will become an observer.

When a user is in observer mode, they will not be able to make changes to the state of the room. However, the observer will be able to move and rotate scene (the body and the user avatars), in order to get the best perspective of the scene without needing to move around the room.

These concepts can enable a few scenarios:

  • One instructor in a common "pod":
  • A group of users gathers around a single anchor image.
  • One user takes ownership of the room and acts as the instructor, so that none of the other users can modify the state of the room.
  • One instructor is at the front of the class without sharing a common anchor with the students:
  • No anchor image is necessary.
  • The instructor takes ownership of the room.
  • The students join the room and move the scene to position in such a way, that the instructor's point of view is clear to them.
